Confirmation Sponsors

Below is some information for sponsors on the night.

The Confirmation Card that has been handed to me already, will be given to the sponsors (by candidates) when they are escorted to your allocated seats. The sponsor will need to take this up to and hand it to the Celebrant when they present the candidate to the Bishop. PLEASE PRESENT THE CANDIDATE AS THEIR SAINT NAME E.G - I PRESENT TO YOU CHRISTOPHER.

Sponsors should present the candidate with their RIGHT HAND ON THE CANDIDATE'S RIGHT SHOULDER.

SPONSORS ARE ONLY REQUIRED DURING THE 'ANOINTING WITH THE OIL OF CHRISM'. During this time, a teacher will guide you as to when to go up.

Please read the following information:

The Essential Rite of Confirmation

The essential Rite of Confirmation comprises of

1. The celebrant places his hand on the head of the candidate.

This continues the practice of the Apostles when they laid hands on those wanting to become
members of the Church Jesus began. [ eg . Acts 8:15 17; 19:5 6; Hebrews 6:2]

The ‘Laying on of Hands’ is an important biblical gesture by which the gift of the
Spirit is invoked . This symbolises the calling of the Holy Spirit

2. The celebrant anoints the candidate’s forehead by marking a cross with the
sacred oil called ‘Chrism’.

The anointing of the candidate’s forehead symbolises that
they are filled with the Holy Spirit, as were the Apostles at Pentecost. The oil of
Chrism is the sacred oil of consecration to God

The Oil of Chrism is not wiped off those confirmed. It should remain on them as a
visible sign of the Sacrament

3. The celebrant says, “Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit.”. The celebrant says, “Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit.”

The sponsor places their right hand on the right shoulder of the candidate and gives
the candidate’s name to the Celebrant; or the candidate may give their own name.

The Celebrant The Celebrant then anoints the forehead of the candidate with Chrism saying,  “Be sealed sealed with the with the gift t of the Holy Spirit.”. The candidate responds with "Amen".

The Celebrant will then say "Peace be with you" and the candidate responds with "And with your spirit".

After that you will be ushered back to your seat.
