Term 1, Week 3
Hi Parents,
What another
great weekend of weather. Hopefully you were able to get out and about and have
some fun.
Quote of the Week:
PARENT INFORMATION NIGHT:
The parent
information night will be tomorrow night as I’m sure you are all aware of. The
evening will begin in the hall at 5:00pm
for important whole school information. At 5:30pm, Year 6 parents will make their way to the Year 6 classroom
for classroom information. It would be great if there was at least 1
representative from each family present, as I will be covering our home
learning routines and if we are all on the same page, there will be less
confusion.
SWIMMING TRIALS:
Just a reminder
that swimming trials are tomorrow. We will leave the school at approximately 10:00am
and return before lunch time. If you wanted to cheer on the students, we will
be swimming between 11:00am and 12:00pm.
HOME LEARNING:
A
reminder that our first ‘2 week’ home learning cycle has started today. The
children were busy planning the next 2 weeks of home learning in their diaries.
Please take the time to go through their planning and make any changes as you
see fit.
Literacy:
Under
this section you will find the literacy learning intentions for the week.
CAFÉ-R (Traits of good readers)
This week, we
will be focusing on summarising.
Summarising helps us identify the main idea and eliminate unnecessary information.
It also enables us to put what we’ve read into our own words so that we can
remember it more easily.
For a narrative
text, this strategy focuses on summarising story elements (i.e. beginning, middle and end).
When your child has completed their home
reading, you can have them talk about the characters, setting, the problem and
the resolution. You could ask them to retell their reading in order or retell
their favourite part.
Voices (Traits of good writers)
The students
will begin to explore poetry this week. Over the coming weeks, I will address the
common elements of poetry and we will investigate how these are applied to
shape poems, limericks, odes and simple ballads.
Numeracy
Under
this section you will find the Numeracy learning intentions for the week.
For numeracy
this week we will be exploring the different mental strategies we could use to
solve addition and subtraction problems. We will be using the jump strategy,
split strategy, compensation strategy and bump strategy. If you would like more
information, ask your child to bring their numeracy book home to show you some
examples on how to correctly apply the strategy.
I will
hopefully see you all tomorrow night.
Enjoy the rest
of the week!
