Week 2 - Term 4 Update

Good afternoon,

Welcome to Week 2, I hope that those of you that were able to attend Family Camp had a good time?! The weather was amazing and I hope you were able to get out and enjoy it it...some very tired young people today!!

REMINDERS

Interschool Carnival - This is on this a Thursday 19th November. Those children attending will need to be at school by 7.50am ready to leave by 8am.

Please make sure your child comes with sunscreen already applied wearing their interschool top. If your child can also bring their school shirt to change into upon returning to school.

Confirmation Home Mass - I am still waiting on this date to be confirmed by Fr Ian. Once I hear from him I will let you know as soon as possible.

St Mary MacKillop Orientation Day - I have received word that this will occur on Thursday 23rd November. Information packs will be sent him with your child in the coming weeks.

If your child is not attending SMMC in 2018, your child is welcome to come to school on this day. Alternatively, you may wish to put them to work at home!

OUR LEARNING

We have begun the term working incredibly hard. In our Literacy lessons we have begun looking at Poetry. We have been discussing definitions of poetry which the students decided was very hard to define!! We have been look at the different elements of poetry such as the use of figurative language, sound devices, rhythm and rhyme as well as structure.

In Maths, we have been looking at Financial Mathematics. We have been learning about how to find 10%, 25% and 50% discount and to then apply this to calculate the new price of the item.

In the first of our Human Development lessons we began with looking at What is Puberty? and what are some of the physical and emotional changes to expect. We discussed that puberty is triggered by hormones being released by their pituitary glands and that it would happen for everybody when it was their time.

I have put out a question jar in which the students can write any questions that they may have. If appropriate I will answer them during our sessions or else I will direct them back to you, their parents.

I also have a card that shows 'I'm all good' on one side. They have this turned over if they are feeling comfortable with the content. On the other side it has 'I need a minute', the students can turn this over and leave the room if they are feeling too uncomfortable! This is helpful for the students to self-regulate to help themselves and others to learn.

In History, we have begun the term looking at Australian migration. We began with looking at the discovery of gold in Australia and what effect that would soon begin to have on the population. We had a Twitter War between Edward Hargraves and John Lister about who found it and how much help was given. The students had a great time completing this activity and came up with some very entertaining hashtags!
