Term 3, Week 5

Hi everybody!

I hope you managed to grab a little bit of vitamin D at some point over the weekend. Big week for the Confirmation candidates as they prepare to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation on Saturday night. Looking forward to seeing you all there!

Lots of information this week!

Quote of the Week:

Bishop Visit:
Bishop Holohan will be visiting the Year 6 students this Wednesday (10:30am – 11:00am) to have a chat about the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Confirmation Retreat:
The Confirmation Retreat will be on this Thursday (9:00am – 12:45pm) in the school hall. All year 6 students will be allowed to wear free dress for the occasion.

I AM STILL WAITING ON A FAIR FEW CANDIDATE AND PRAYER BUDDY LETTERS FOR AN ACTIVITY ON THE DAY. PLEASE REFER TO THE PREVIOUS BLOG POST ‘CONFIRMATION RETREAT’ FOR MORE INFORMATION. I HATE TO PUT THE HARD WORD ON YOU, BUT IT IS REALLY DISHEARTENING WHEN THE DAY COMES AND SOME STUDENTS CAN’T PARTICIAPTE IN THE ACTIVITY BECAUSE THEY DIDN’T RECEIVE A LETTER! SORRY TO BE MR HASSLE, I KNOW YOU ARE ALL BUSY!

Sacrament of Confirmation:
The Confirmation candidates will be receiving the Sacrament this SATURDAY NIGHT AT 6:00PM. PLEASE ARRIVE AT THE CHURCH NO LATER THAN 5:45PM to allow ample time to be escorted to your allocated seats. Please ensure your child is wearing their ‘Sunday Best’ attire with sash already in place. All candidates will receive a safety pin to attach sash to their clothes and a dove pin to attach to their sash on Friday.
I am expecting all prayer buddies to be at the service on Saturday Night to support their friends. I have allocated you all seats in the front half of the Church and have them entering the Church with the candidates. PLEASE LET ME KNOW TOMORROW IF YOU WILL NOT BE ATTENDING so I can make any required changes.

Parent Help Required:
Next week, I will be posing a situation to the Year 6 students which will result in them building a ‘balsa wood’ boat that floats. The students will work through the design process in pairs to complete the task. (Please keep this to yourselves until I pose the problem)

I am on the hunt for any parents that can come in to the classroom to pass on the diverse range of skills I know are out there!

At the moment, I will be blocking out Tuesday afternoon (1:30pm – 3:00pm) for the task but will be will possibly include a portion of Friday afternoon (2:00pm – 3:00pm) for parents that can’t make a Tuesday (PLEASE NOTE THAT THE FRIDAY AFTERNOON WOULD BE AN EXTRA SESSION AND THEREFORE WON’T OCCUR EACH WEEK)

For those parents that can’t make either days, the students will be experimenting with the ‘Seesaw App’ which allows them to keep you informed and updated on their progress throughout the task.

A boat launch is in the pipeline to conclude the task. Please contact me via email or in person if you are interested in helping out. (Help would not be required until Week 7 onwards)

Literacy:
Under this section you will find the literacy learning intentions for the week.
CAFÉ-R (Traits of good readers)
The children have been busy reading, answering questions and completing activities on the novels that they are reading. This will continue this for the next few weeks.

We have been focusing on the comprehension strategy of finding information last week and this will continue this week. Finding information is a handy strategy as it is very difficult to remember every bit of detail that we read. We have been practising skimming and scanning to find key words or phrases.

Voices (Traits of good writers)
The students have been busy completing Confirmation procedures as well as their Saint reports or posters over the last week or two. Next week, we will begin examining explanations.

Numeracy
Under this section you will find the Numeracy learning intentions for the week.
We will be investigating patterns and functions this week and 2D shapes next week. Please be aware that the children will have some extra home learning on the multiplication, division and area concepts. This will be due on Friday.

Home Learning Grid:
A new home learning grid will be given out tomorrow. Please note that there is a new section for the novel study. This will be due Friday 24th August. Remember that your signature is now required in your child’s diary.

Enjoy the next couple of weeks!

Mr Jones
