Wow...it's Week 6!

Good morning,

Welcome to Week 6, it has arrived in a flurry of activity! We have had a very busy last few days with our Leadership Retreat. We also had a presentation from Surf Lifesaving WA talking about basic first aid skills.

A very big thank you to all of you for helping us to enjoy a fantastic lunch and morning tea on Friday. It was greatly appreciated by the students! Sharing a meal together helps to strengthen bonds and encourage conversation and it was lovely to see the students sitting together enjoying the beautiful food!

Thank you to Alicia Higgins, Bree Omodei, Georgie Valmadre and Marylee Edwards for coming in to help to set up and prepare the food.

REMINDERS - WEEK 6

Peron Reserve Excursion - we will be off to Peron Reserve on Friday afternoon to help oil and clean up the observation deck. We will be leaving school at 1.15pm and returning by 2.55pm. Please make sure that your child brings their water bottle and a shirt that can be worn to cover their clothing.

Project Compassion - this Friday the students in the Service Ministry will be making popcorn to be sold at lunch time. All money raised from this will go to support Project Compassion.

During the time of Lent we are encouraged to Pray, Fast and to Give to Others. It would be fantastic if you could have some conversation with your child about ways that they can do these things. Each Thursday, the students collect all money donated to the Project Compassion box...it would be great if you could discuss them donating some of their hard earned pocket money to this cause.

Year 6 Prayer Assembly - this will be on Friday 17th March. It would be wonderful if as many parents as possible are able to join us.

Interschool Swimming Carnival - this will be on Thursday 23rd March. Please make sure your child has handed in their note.

BTN Assignments - each week on a Wednesday as a class we watch the current episode of Behind the News.

The students receive a copy of the questions they will be expected to answer as a hard copy that we discuss before watching the episode. This is glued into their BTN books and can be used to answer the questions in their BTN exercise books if there are any tech or WiFi issues.

I have placed a lot of emphasis on the students taking responsibility for completing these weekly assignments. We have discussed ways to problem solve if they experience any difficulty in understanding the task or in getting it completed. This can include:

  • Watching the episode again - this can happen at home or at school.
  • Asking mum or dad to check through their answers before they submit the quiz. Once they submit it, they aren't able to go back and edit and I need to then delete the whole thing and they have to redo it.
  • Writing out their answers to the questions in their BTN book.
  • Taking screenshots of their answers.
  • Drafting their responses in their book and having these checked before writing them out in Edmodo.

If your child is absent on a Wednesday, I would still like for them to complete the assignment. I place a copy of the questions for them to access on Edmodo and the link to the BTN website is there as well.

I am still having a significant number of students coming to me the morning that the assignment is due with an excuse for it not being completed.

I would appreciate your support in helping them to manage this weekly assignment, please let me know if there are any ongoing concerns.

OUR LEARNING

It has been a very busy few weeks here in Silver Room, we have had many opportunities to learn about a wide variety of things!

On Friday 3rd March, Sue Barton came and conducted our Year 6 Leadership Retreat. This was a fantastic opportunity for the students to look at themselves and the gifts that they have and how they can use these to contribute as part of the Leadership Group for 2017.

The students rocked along to some old school tunes of Michael Jackson's 'Man in the Mirror' as they contemplated their strengths and weaknesses and how they could use them to help model good leadership. They discussed the importance of our actions matching our words and the message and impression that can be given to others.

They were also asked to think about the ingredients of a good leader and why these ingredients were important - ears, heart, hands, smile, open eyes, strong arms, legs and a brain.

They also engaged in activities designed to show the importance of teamwork. It was really interesting to see the students different personalities come out during these activities. They were able to articulate what worked well and what needed to be improved upon which was great to see!

Yesterday, we had Kaylee and Andrea from Surf Lifesaving WA come and talk to us about basic first aid skills and how to apply them. They shared with us the steps of DRSABCD and gave the students to opportunity to practise them which was fantastic - they all found keeping up the compression cycle quite tiring!

During our Maths lessons we have been looking at using mental strategies to complete addition and subtraction algorithms. We are expanding numbers and then grouping them together to make them easier to add or subtract as well as looking at the compensation strategy where we either add to or take away from a number to make it easier to add or subtract mentally. It would be great if around the house, perhaps whilst out shopping you can ask your child to round the amounts of some items to add them together to work out total cost.

In our Design Technology lessons, we have been discussing dairy farming and the ways that farmers can work to keep their pastures healthy. Today we will begin looking at what it means to use the resources farmers need in sustainable ways.

If anyone has any contacts in the dairy industry and might know someone that would be interested and willing to come in and talk to the students about sustainable farming practices it would be most appreciative. Please send me an email if you are able to help.

HOMEWORK - WEEK 6

This week I have placed an extra emphasis on students filling in their diaries carefully and in detail. It is important that it is filled in regularly and checked by yourselves in order to develop good habits for next year.

  • Reading - 15-20 minutes and then written in their diary and signed.
  • Spelling - LCWC of all list words and their iCard sort created for the week.
  • Mental Maths - Unit 7 - Days 1-4. I have asked students to complete Day 1 over the week and we will mark this on Friday.
  • BTN - Edmodo Quiz - Episode 5 'Women at Work'. This is due next Wednesday 15th March. I have spoken with the students at length about ways to problem solve if they have tech or WiFi issues that may prevent them from completing their quiz online. They have 7 nights to complete the assigned task - there is no excuse for them to not have completed the assignment.

Have a great week!

Mrs Delane
