Term 1, Week 5

Hi Parents and students,

Welcome to another week! I hope you had a great weekend and everyone is well rested.

Affirmation of the Week:

Swimming Carnival:
Congratulations to Sienna and Sam for an outstanding display in the pool last Thursday. Well done also to Bede and Mia for their runner-up efforts and to all the Year 6’s for their leadership on the day.

Literacy:
Under this section you will find the literacy learning intentions for the week.

CAFÉ-R (Traits of good readers)

Due to the interruptions last week, we will continue to practise the different roles required during our ‘literature circles’.

We will also focus on two comprehension strategies.

Summarising focuses on the story elements such as the beginning, middle and end.

Inferring is when readers combine what is read with relevant prior knowledge. If readers can read between the lines, they can get a better understanding of the text.

Voices (Traits of good writers)
We are currently working on the mighty middle (problem and events) of our narratives. We will then work on our excellent endings.

All students have received a rubric, which is aligned to the ‘VOICES’ framework and this will act as a checklist to ensure we are including all the elements of a great narrative. A copy of this rubric can be found via our Literacy OneNote folder.

Spelling Group’s weekly focus

Blue Group: Vowel alternation: Long to short or Schwa

Yellow Group: Adding ‘ing’ to words with VCe and VVC patterns

Green Group: Prefixes: pre-, fore-, post-, after-

Numeracy
Under this section you will find the Numeracy learning intentions for the week.

This week, we will be reviewing and applying addition and subtraction mental strategies.

Home Learning Grid

You will be able to find a copy of the ‘Week 5/6’ home learning grid under our home learning folder in One Note. All students will receive a hard copy to glue into their exercise books.

Please ensure your child is organised and staying on top of their Home learning Grid through regular discussions and checks. Please feel free to contact me if you require any clarification regarding the grid.

Enjoy the week,

Mr Jones
