Week 7 News

Good afternoon,

Here are few reminders of upcoming events for the next couple of weeks.

REMINDERS

Father's Day Breakfast - This fantastic event is on this Friday morning from 7.45am. Please RSVP to Fran Marrell if you have not already done so.

Reconciliation - Mass will be held on Wednesday night beginning at 6pm. It would be wonderful to see as many Year 6's as possible there to support the Year 3 students. Please make sure that you have returned the note sent home last week by Mrs Meyer if you are able to join us.

Calendar Art - Come in and check out our amazing calendar art pieces. These make great gifts for the grandies! Order forms are due back in with payment as soon as possible.

Shoebox Appeal - Please make sure that your child is working hard to earn the money to purchase their contribution for the Annual Shoebox Appeal. All items including the $2.50 are to be in by the 12th September.

Confirmation Home Mass - This will be held on Monday 5th September. Please mark this date in your calendar. Further details will follow later in the week in regards to the time and what to bring.

Shrek Update Meeting - This is on this Wednesday 31st August. This is a chance to touch base and see how things are travelling. If you are able to come along it would be great to have you!

We are in need of some volunteers to take charge of 'dressing the stage'. We will need foliage, plants in pots etc. If you are able to help with this we would greatly appreciate it.

Protective Behaviours PD - This will be held at our school hall on Thursday night beginning at 7pm. Please see the newsletter for further information.

OUR LEARNING

In our Literacy lessons we have been looking at different forms of poetry. Last week we began looking at the poem O Captain! My Captain! by Walt Whitman. The students have enjoyed learning about the history and events that prompted this poem to be written.

We watched a brief clip of the film 'Dead Poets Society' which has encouraged the students to think about the way in which they read poetry and how it can be used to express their feelings. They have also gained a better understanding through the writing of different types of poems how they can use words to express their feelings.

We will begin looking at analysing the poem The Highwayman by Albert Noyes next. This is a ballad that is written to tell a story...I am sure that we will be looking for real life examples of ballads that have been written...think Guns n Roses and Banjo Patterson for inspiration! A good excuse to dust off some of the old CD's!!

In Maths we have been looking at rating the likelihood of events occurring using a scale of 0 to 1. Some students have been nutting through how to multiply mixed numeral fractions as well as looking at constructing rectangles using given angles.

It has been a very busy term and I am very impressed with the mature and focused approach that the students are demonstrating towards their learning. We have been having some fantastic class discussions around our BTN topics as well as the Civil War in relation to the O Captain! My Captain! poem.
